Did You Know?

Cow Dung is antiseptic! Not only is it free from bacteria, it does a good job of killing it. India's cows produce more than 800 million tons of dung every year. Most is used as fertilizer and some to prepare vibhuti, holy ash. Dried dung is odorless, and produces a slow, even heat. Additionally, smoke from a dung fire keeps flies away and acts as a mosquito repellent. Packed on the outside walls of a house, cow dung acts as an insulator, keeping heat out in the summer and holding it inside in winter.

India Losing on Patents ?  

Indraprasth, Dec 8 (UNI) - After Neem, turmeric and jamun, now it is cow's urine, traditionally used for medicinal purposes in India, which has been patented in the United States as a distilled bio-enhancer. The government was aware of this fact and was considering the steps to be taken in this regard, official sources said here.

Cow's urine is a component of 'Panch Gawya,' a mixture of cow's milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung, used from ancient times as a component of food and medicine. It is also used in various ayurvedic medicines. Though there was no separate strategy for popularizing use of Panch Gawya, it was being popularised as part of the popularisation of the Indian System of Medicine and Health medicines, they said.

Now with the patenting of Cow's urine has confirmed the belief of naturopaths that it has got medicinal properties which enhances the life span. Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai was among the staunch supporters of cow' urine.Earlier, the patenting of turmeric and neem in the US had created a furore in the country as people protested the patenting of traditional Indian knowledge abroad. 
Recently, the Jamun fruits that has been widely used in the Indian system for treatment of diabetes, has been patented in the US.

A US patent has been granted to Indian scientists on the use of cow urine distillate as bio-enhancer. A combination of Indian traditional wisdom and modern science led to the unique US patent No 6,410,059 granted on June 25, 2002. The patent has been granted for a pharmaceutical composition containing an antibiotic and cow urine distillate in an amount effective to enhance the anti-microbial effects of antibiotic and anti fungal agents. The invention relates to a novel use of cow urine as activity enhancer and availability facilitator for bioactive molecules, including anti-infective and anti-cancer agents. The invention has direct implication in drastically reducing the dosage of antibiotics, drugs and anti-cancer agent while increasing the efficiency of absorption of bio-active molecules, thereby reducing the cost of treatment and also the side-effects due to toxicity. The use of cow urine is known for a long time in India. Gaw-mutra (cow's urine) has been described as a substance with innumerable therapeutic values in Sushrita Samhita and Ashtanga Sangraha. However, the biological activity of cow's urine was not tested scientifically.
